5 Centimetres Per Second

Also known as Byousoku go senchimeetoru or as I prefer to call it, byousoku go senchi.

It’s a movie by Makoto Shinkai, if I’m not wrong. Who also did Hoshi no Koe, which I loved.

Byousoku go senchi is rather harder to say. It’s composed of three chapters, all of which center around a boy called Touno…something. Dang, I forgot his name.

The character rendering is done in his trademark, slightly weird style. The backgrounds, however, are superbly rendered and shiney.

It’s generally about romance, without his usual science fiction elements and things. Life and romance in general.

The first chapter was very sweet, about how the guy who is living really far away from a girl travels to see her one last time before he moves even further away and  can’t see her anymore. Second chapter is about a girl, who likes the Touno guy, who doesn’t know what to do with her life beyond Touno-kun. About how he always has that faraway look in his eyes, seeing something she doesn’t. The third chapter is about them all grown up, and Touno-kun meeting a woman at a railroad junction, who seems familiar but doesn’t get to see her face, and decides it’s better after all just to continue with his life.

I personally love the first chapter, find the second one so-so and can’t really stand the third one. The ending of the third chapter is wonderfully sweet though.

Overall I won’t say it’s something I would want to watch over and over again. It’s kinda similar to Kure-nai in feeling, but with less lovable characters. And because I’m not generally a fan of these dreamy slow-moving things.
